Verse of the Day: Mark 7:5 NKJV
“Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?””
In one of Jesus’ encounters with the Pharisees, He was asked why His disciples did not follow the tradition of elders. These traditions were expansions of the written law which had been taught to the Jews over a number of years. They were man’s interpretations on top of the law. Many Jewish leaders at that time honoured these (oral) laws more than the written law. These traditions were passed down through teachings.
In today’s text, Jesus’ disciples were accused of neglecting the traditions of elders and not the law because they did not wash their hands before eating. These washings were commanded by tradition and not Scripture. The intention of these tradition seems to be pure but not scriptural. The washing of hand here was ceremonial which they performed to make them spiritually clean.
Jesus’ response clearly showed that their interpretation of the law is man’s commandments and not God’s. If the Bible is tweaked, it becomes our commandment and not God’s. We shouldn’t allow our interpretation of God’s law take preeminence over following the law itself. The Law of God should form the basis of our way of life and not our interpretation. Certain sayings are ancient but not true if checked with the scripture. They have become acceptable such that many believe they are quotes from the Bible.
Examine your practices and beliefs today. Are there traditions or interpretations that you hold to which might be overshadowing the clear commands of Scripture?
