Stay Awake In Time of Ease

Verse of the Day: Luke 22:46 NKJV

“Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.””

As Christians, we often find ourselves most alert in times of struggle and challenge, constantly turning to God for strength and guidance. But what happens when life seems easy, or when we feel spiritually strong? It’s in these restful seasons, when things are going smoothly, that we can drift into spiritual slumber. Much like a traveler may become drowsy on a quiet, pleasant path, we are prone to grow complacent when life lacks trials.

Consider how often we’re drawn to God's throne during difficulties, actively seeking Him when we’re faced with struggles. Yet, when everything seems calm—our temporal needs are met, and we feel spiritually fulfilled—these can be the very times we’re most in danger of spiritual sleep. This is the "enchanted ground," a place where peaceful surroundings lull us into inattentiveness. Even Jesus’ disciples, after experiencing His glory on the mountaintop, fell asleep instead of watching and praying. So, let us be joyful in our blessings and ease, but always watchful, praying for a spirit that stays vigilant in all seasons.

Reflection

Take a moment to reflect on the following verses:

Matthew 26:41; Ephesians 6:18; 1 Corinthians 16:13

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me stay awake in every season. Teach me to watch and pray, to be alert whether in peace or in struggle, that I may not lose sight of You in times of ease.
