Verse of the Day: Ephesians 5:14 NKJV
“Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.””
In the Christian life, we often find ourselves living in paradoxes—both asleep and awake at the same time. Our souls, quickened by the Holy Spirit, long to stay alert to God’s call, yet our sinful nature pulls us into spiritual drowsiness. The believer’s heart can be sluggish in prayer, weak in devotion, and distracted from the joy found in Christ. This spiritual sleep is dangerous, leaving us vulnerable, just as Samson lost his strength while resting in the wrong place.
With a world around us lost and in need of salvation, it’s a tragedy to be spiritually asleep. We may not realise it, but eternity is near, and now is not the time for complacency. It’s a moment for spiritual awakening—shaking off the drowsiness of comfort and going out to meet Christ with burning passion and readiness. Sometimes, God sends us "wake-up calls" in different ways and times through challenging situations, reminding us to rise from our slumber.
Yet, if you find within yourself a heart that still stirs, even faintly, take hope! Even when we feel spiritually heavy, if our hearts long for more of Jesus, it’s a sign that life remains. When our renewed hearts wrestle against spiritual laziness, it is by God’s grace that we are kept alive in Him. He hears that faint cry and calls to us, inviting us to open our hearts fully to Him.
Reflection
Take a moment to reflect on the following verses:
Ephesians 6:10; Isaiah 52:1; Song of Solomon 5:2
Prayer
Heavenly Father, awaken us from our spiritual slumber. Forgive us for being lazy in our devotion and careless with the gift of Your Spirit within us. Stir our hearts to be alert, ready, and filled with the desire to meet You with burning passion. Keep our souls alive, and may we be watchful and ready for Your return.
